Falling out of an infant sled. Our father was pulling me to our Grandmother's house so she could babysit. I remember being bundled in a snowsuit so stiff I could barely move. The diaper bag was between my legs. In the distance, I could see the the remains of a Queen Ann's Lace weed sticking up through snow, and I tried to grab it as I went by. It was frozen in the ground, and it pulled me right out of the sled, but Dad never noticed and kept tugging the sled down the sidewalk to the corner. A lady across the street in a navy blue dress with an apron over it, wearing a heavy black overcoat ran yelling to him that he'd lost his baby. He turned to look, and there I was laying face down in the snow crying. They said I was only about 6 months old and couldn't even sit up yet. They also said I couldn't possibly remember it, until I described the clothing of the woman from across the street. Dad didn't even remember that until I told him many years later.

About a month later, dad sat me on a folding chair with a high back. I fell through the back of the chair onto an iron furnace grating and broke my right arm. They thought I couldn't possibly remember that either, until I described the chair. ;o)

What's your earliest memory?
