When we lived in town, our mother had a large pair of kissing Dutch boy and girl in the front flower bed. The first costume I remember wearing was as that little Dutch girl. I have no idea where the costume came from. Many people had those Dutch children though back then, as salt and pepper shakers, knickknacks, garden ornaments, even embroidered on linens, so I wouldn't be surprised if the five and dime didn't have the costume for the characters.
