Shortcomings were rapidly and repeatedly pointed out to us as youngsters; it bothered me then, and I feel I was always on the defensive. But when I began to study The Bible at around age 40, I came to understand the imperfections of us all, and I rejoiced in that because then I could easily apologize, think to myself, "Well, God isn't finished with me yet" and move on trying to do better the next time.
