RB'S QUESTION OF THE DAY: May 25, 2013: Do you know why red poppies are associated with Memorial Day?

Do you know why red poppies are associated with Memorial Day?
(If you researched it online, did you know some about it before you researched it?)

When our soldiers died fighting overseas during WWI, the wildflower, the red flowered Corn Poppy (Papaver rhoeas), quickly grew over the area disturbed by their new graves. This poppy inspired a Canadian doctor and soldier, John McCrae, to write a poem about the dead soldiers on May 3rd, 1915. Since then the poppy has become the symbol we use to remember the many answered who call to duty and the many who paid a very heavy price in doing so. Wearing a poppy on any war or military memorial day brings remembrance to their sacrifice.

Just thought you might like to know.

God bless.
