In our family, it was always some kind of pork and some kind of cabbage. Our mother's favorite for New Year's Day was pork roasted with sauerkraut. Mine is ham stewed with cabbage.
Where we live down south, however, the tradition is Hoppin' John which is black-eyed peas, usually prepared with some kind of pork, but I like ham stewed with cabbage better, so that's usually what we have.
