Probably my "best" deal yet was at a yard sale where a neighbor was getting evicted and needed money badly. He had two antique tables his aunt had left him. I gave him $100 each, and went to have them appraised. The one was a 4' wide mahogany gaming table with ball and claw feet that opened to be 10' long. It appraised at $1,750.00. The second was a large hand carved teak fern stand with a marble insert which appraised at $850.00. When I found out the appraisals, I went back to him and told him that if at any time in the future, he had $200 and wanted the tables back, he could have them. He declined and said that I had helped him at a time in need, and that was enough. I still have the fern stand. I sold the gaming table long ago because we moved to a house where we had no room for it.
