For some reason, here in NC, people do it very early - right before Thanksgiving. I think that's too early. Before Christmas gets here, you're sick of seeing the stuff, and it takes the "magic" away from it all.
We have a projection light that has slides for different holidays throughout the year that shines on the side of the house and stays up all year round. We just change the slide to the appropriate holidays and leave it off if there are no holidays.
The rest of the decorations go up during the first two weeks of December.
